Congratulations
to Phil Bononcini and the The
team locked up the 2001 Championship The race was great, but it was about more than just close competition on the water. The tragic loss of George Stratton Sunday morning last year weighed heavy on everyone's mind this weekend. Randy had desperately wanted to win the 2000 final for George, but missed the opportunity due to a penalty. That would not be the case this year. What followed during the award ceremony was one of the most moving moments of the weekend. As Randy accepted the first place plaque, he called out to George's son Chris who slowly took the stage. Randy briefly explained how much George had meant to him and handed the award to Chris while choking back tears stating "Chris, this one's for your pappa." As we look back on the race, we offer thanks to all the Unlimited Light teams
for making the trip to San Diego and offer a special congratulations to the
UL-110 Miss CompAir. Randy Hass, Tracy Haas, Carl Haas, Mike Osier and the
entire team put a lot of hard work into this weekend's victory and it showed. Results from the Final! - Randy Haas takes Bayfair!!!
What a barn-burner!!!!! UL 72 and UL 110 were hooked up for 2 and 3/4 laps...with Phil ahead in the straight-aways on the inside, and Randy pulling ahead in the turns. The crowd went wild!!!!!! Phil quit with a quarter lap to go -- tried restarting, but couldn't make it work. Good job and congratulations to all!!!! - Patti From the desk of Patricia Darling... UL 40 did not choose to run as their engine has failed, so the UL 21 was given that spot. I just spoke with Dave Bender: he has toasted his motor and is through for the day. That leaves a real match-up between Haas (2 wins) and Bononcini (a first and a second), with Jerry Hopp really close in the hunt. Congratulations to Vince for getting his crack in the hull repaired. From the desk of Patricia Darling... To all--report from Marie Frauenheim: Heat 3 has just been completed. Five boats left the dock and were all
together for a most of the warm-up period. From the one minute gun, right up through the start, Randy, Phil, Dave and Jerry were absolutely
together--making a very exciting start. UL110, UL 72 and UL 38 held blistering speeds around the course--together for over 2 and a half laps,
before Bender smoked out on the back stretch of the last lap. A very Nick dropped out as he couldn't get his engine cleared. Hope the blown motors From last evening: Jim Riley, ULHRA Chaplain, led a service of Remembrance for George Stratton. He announced that this was not a prayer service, but one to encourage those gathered to remember George in their stories. Carrie Gregory, Mark Evans, Kim Gregory and other shared memories, many of which spoke of "Stratton time"--George showing up late or not at all because he was so focused on the boat. Jim asked Chris Stratton to stand and congratulated his growth and maturation in this year. Tracy Haas related a poem as the finale. Also there was a moment of silence dedicated to George, this morning. For those of us not in San Diego, let's send our thoughts and prayers for good, and safe racing. Dave Bender and the UL-38 were running strong until they went down just past the mid-point of the heat. A great duel between the UL-110, the UL-72 and the UL-15! Photos!
