Jerry Hopp and the
UL-15 Mike’s
Hard Lemonade/Happy Go Lucky take San Diego!
The Unlimited Light final here in San Diego would not disappoint fans who have come to expect the consistent close racing that has been present throughout the 2003 season. This time out, Jerry Hopp (UL-15 Mike’s Hard Lemonade/Happy Go Lucky) would duel with George Woods (UL-51 Security Race Products) and Kevin Aylesworth (UL-5 San Diego Thunderboats presents Freedom Racing) for first. Hopp would develop a lead that he would not surrender, but we have to tip our hat to the challenge served up by Woods and Aylesworth. Had there been even a bobble, either team could have grabbed the first place spot. Hopp would not miss a beat taking the checkered flag. A solid run for the Mike’s Hard Lemonade/Happy Go Lucky team. Teammates on the beach, but fierce competitors on the water. Phil Bononcini and George Woods would duel this heat out right to the last lap with Bononcini edging out the win. Cal Phipps UL-10 would go down for a time, but refire and finish. The UL-40 was not able to make the heat due to an engine change between heats. They just ran out of time. Saturday, 5:00 PM - Results
from Heat 2A
Vince "the X-Man" Xaudaro jumped to a lead he would hold almost the entire race. Challenging him would by Jerry Hopp in the UL15 Mike's Hard Lemonade / Happy Go Lucky. It was, at times, a great side-by-side duel as these two would not let up. It was only in the final turn that Hopp would overtake Xaudaro and even then it would come down to a "nose at the wire" win for the UL-15 as Vince almost caught him. A hard charging Kevin Aylesworth would challenge but not catch the leaders. Great, great racing start to finish. Saturday, 3:30 PM - Draws for
Heat 2A and 2B The UL-58 SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is done for today due to engine problems. They will attempt to repair and return tomorrow. Saturday, 2:00 PM - Results from Heat 1B
In Heat 1B, it would be a battle for first that kept fans on the edge of their seat. This time, George Woods and Jerry Hopp would battle for the lead almost the entire heat with Hopp edging out an amazingly fast Woods in the final lap for the win. The UL-40 would enter the heat, but something just didn't feel right for the pilot so he brought the hull back in prior to the finish. Behind the leaders, a fast running "Ping" Conflitti (UL-58) would over take and build a lead on Steve Hook (UL-19) finalizing the order of finish. Saturday, 2:00 PM - Results from Heat 1A
This time out the Lights were four wide coming out of the first turn. At the end of lap one, it would by the UL-72 establishing a lead over the UL-10 and the UL-5. The 10 and 5 would fight for position through much of the three lap heat. As the boats entered the third lap, Phipps (UL-10) would edge out Aylesworth (UL-5) and advance to challenge Bononcini (UL-72) for the lead. Going into the last turn, the UL-10 and the UL-72 would be side-by-side. At the exit of the that turn, the UL-72 Graham Trucking would take the lead and the win. A great heat of close racing! UL5 Kevin Aylesworth - San Diego Thunderboat - Supercharged Engine (SE) The addition of the UL136 was a pleasant surprise. The UL14, who we expected, was unable to attend due to illness in the family. Speaking of those on the mend, UL5 pilot Kevin Alyesworth's mother (who has had a very rough month following injury) is doing well enough to join her son in the pits this weekend. We welcome her! A full field of Unlimited Lights have been out on the water testing! Thunder is on the water her in San Diego... Click here for photos form Thursday in San Diego. Questions, comments? E-mail the
