Phipps wins the start and the heat.
Cal Phipps, driving the UL-10 Wright
Pontiac, Cadillac, GMC took the lead at the start and was never headed
in Heat 1B. Phipps, the 5th fastest qualifier, bested Greg Hopp in the
UL-1 Mike's Hard Lemonade, and Paul Droullard in the UL-9 Summit
Contracting-American Eagle.
Phipps not only was first over the line, he
won the battle for the inside lane and raced to an average speed of
110.214, Hopp was about 2 roostertails behind at 108.02 while Droullard
was less than half a roostertail behind Hopp at 107.314 mph. Phipps
drives the first all Unlimited Light hull designed and built by Ron
Jones sr. for Milt & Charley Wiggins of Rainbow City AL. He showed that
normally aspirated power is still competitive with the supercharged
teams in Unlimited Lights competition.
After the first round of heats, the
standings show Phipps and Kevin Aylesworth each with 400 points, Vince
Xaudaro and Greg Hopp have 300 points, with Michael Flaherty and Paul Droullard
with 225 points. 5 other drivers did not score points in the
first round of heats, including Steve Hook in the UL-19 Ms ZipFizz,
Harold Mills in the UL-40 Miss Red Dot Corporation, Ken Brodie in the
UL-50, Pingree Conflitti in the UL-58 Union Dooz and Mike Horvath in the
UL-559 Outlaw.
Heats 2A, 2B, 3A, and 3B plus the Final will
be contested on Sunday. Other than temperatures near 100 degrees with
high humidity, the racing conditions are excellent and the crowds a very
large.

Close works in horseshoes, but it can be
costly in Unlimited Lights racing.
Michael Flaherty, driving the UL-72 Miss Boat
Electric knew he had the start wired. He took the lead and raced ahead of
Kevin Aylesworth going into turn one. On Lap 2, Aylesworth in the UL-5
Spirit of Evansville took the lead, but Flaherty came from behind on the
Final Turn to defeat Aylesworth and take Heat 1A at the Tri State Chevy
Dealers Evansville Freedom Festival.
Only one problem. Flaherty was early for the
start. Not much..just a boat length..but in this sport when you're early,
no matter how close, it's a 1 minute penalty. So in Heat 1A, Kevin
Aylesworth took the victory. Because of the penalty, Vince Xaudaro in the
UL-929 Holweger Development and Construction Inc. finished second, followed
by Flaherty in third.
Harold Mills in the UL-40 Miss Red Dot
Corporation was third at the start but went dead in the water in turn number
two. Pingree Conflitti was 5th at the start in the UL-58 Union Dooz.
Conflitti appeared to be running well till the end of lap two when engine
problems developed and the Union Dooz was unable to finish.
Heat 1B is scheduled for 4:00pm Central Time
this afternoon.
