Phoenix, Arizona 1996

GILA RIVER CASINO UNLIMITED CUP, Phoenix

The kick-off race for '96 took place on Firebird Lake, part of the vast Firebird International Raceway complex, in Chandler, Ariz., just south of Phoenix on I-10. Eight teams answered the call, including the new UL-72 Pocket Mechanic boat, driven by rookie Phil Bononcini of Redmond, Wash. Defending champion Dave Bender and the Miss Personal Touch, co-owned by dad Gene, proved once again to be the masters of Firebird. Dave swept through two qualifying heats and raced away with the championship final. Other heat winners were Randy Haas in dad Carl's Miss Leroi and Bononcini, in a splendid debut. How they finished in the final:

1. Dave Bender, Miss Personal Touch, El Dorado CA; 2. Mark Weber, Pennzoil Pontiac, St. Clair Shores MI; 3. Randy Haas, Miss Leroi, Toledo OH; 4. Phil Bononcini, Pocket Mechanic, Redmond WA; 5. Greg Hopp, Graham Trucking, Everett WA; DNS--Joe Tate, Miss Toledo, Detroit MI; Paul Droullard, Miss KDKB Radio, Seattle WA.

Also at Firebird was Mark Weber's brother Mike, from Atlanta, driving the West Chester, Ohio-based Lane Automotive craft of Huey Newport. It was a DNF and a DNS in the two preliminary heats.
